I only download music cause I’m poor, and I would find it too difficult to choose between what CD I want when I scrape up enough money. I do support by going to shows though, assuming that the price isn’t outrageous; ie $40 to see ATAL=fuck that. I always told myself if I somehow stumble upon a surplus of money, then I’d go back and buy the albums I really enjoyed.

We all know that music piracy is a pretty large thing going on these days. I mean for christ’s sake, Lil’ Wayne’s new album that doesn’t release till February leaked a week ago. Album leaks are serious business, and I can totally see why it would harm your finances. But here’s the nitty gritty…

You had a single, solitary track leak. ONE. Not an album, not a discography, but a single track that might not even be your first single. I’m not going to say it was bad or good, because I honestly haven’t heard it yet. Don’t really care, whatever. The point is, this leak will probably do more for you than any other sort of promotions or advertising can do. You can SAY an album is an instant classic, but that’s all conjecture until you’ve actually HEARD an album. One leaked track can give your fans an idea of where you’re heading with your music, how the album might sound, and so on. Basically, instead of having to press a thousand or so legitimate CD singles for radio play and sending them out, one leaked track has done all that work for you AND FOR FREE.

So stop whining. You’ve already got hoards of people on your dick that have already spent money on it for pre-orders or reserves.

Oh, and Food & Liquor didn’t sell badly because it leaked, it sold badly because it was a lackluster album. Don’t blame your failures on someone else.

Addendum: To the great majority of people who run around saying that everyone needs to buy the new Lupe because he needs to get supported, please check yourself. Most of you are “stealing” everyone else’s music on god’s green earth. If you’re going to be an activist for supporting artists, you should be buying a whole lot more CDs than you actually are. I’m willing to bet your iTunes is stashed full of pirated music in comparison to the few CDs you actually own.

Oh, and support your artists through buying music through the label’s internet site. It guarantees that the artist will see more of the money of your purchase than if you buy it through Best Buy or Target or whatever. Just so you know.

The track “I’m Beaming” that was leaked last night was NOT authorized or intentionally leaked by myself or my company.

Plain and simple its STOLEN property. And this goes for ANY record or track that leaks or is made available for illegal download from this day forward.

Actions are being taken and the authorities have been notified.

As a personal plea to all my fans PLEASE DO NOT share, stream, or download any unauthorized or stolen Lupe Fiasco music.

A lot of time and energy goes into the creation of this music, not to mention large sums of money, money provided by my record company as well as from my own personal finances. My music is the product of my life. It means so much to me. I take pride in it and i also take pride in how it changes peoples lives and gives them hope. So to see it treated in this manner really numbs the soul. So many of my family and friends rely on me for their well-being and I rely on my music to give me the opportunities that allow me to provide for them.

So this one i’m taking personal. And I will do ALL that is in my power and my circle of influence to make sure that the persons directly or even remotely responsible for this and any future events involving the piracy and illegal distribution and solicitation of my music will be brought to justice and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Both criminally as well as civilly.

With the history that surrounds the devastating and massive piracy of my first album i’m sure some of you can understand why this very harsh stance that is being taken up. And for those of you unsympathetic enough not to understand i can only compare it to someone breaking into your house and stealing everything not tied down or someone kidnapping you sister or brother and ransoming them back to you. A deep sense of helplessness. I hope you never have to feel this and i wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy.
